JULY 2023 is U.V. Safety Awareness Month - Safeguarding Our Health Under the Sun
July marks U.V. Safety Awareness Month, a time of year when many of us eagerly prepare to savor the delightful moments of summer. Embracing picnics, engaging in outdoor sports, immersing ourselves in the refreshing waters of the pool or beach, and indulging in relaxation with a beverage in hand, while the gentle breeze caresses our hair, sounds utterly delightful, doesn't it? However, what fails to be delightful is the potential harm to our skin and eyes from prolonged exposure to the sun's U.V. rays.
During the summer season, U.V. Safety Awareness Month aims to raise awareness about the increased outdoor activities we indulge in while enjoying the warmth. However, it's important to recognize that prolonged exposure without protection escalates the risk of sun damage. The sun emits Ultraviolet (U.V.) light, consisting of three types: U.V.A., U.V.B., and U.V.C. While the Earth's ozone layer shields us from the most harmful U.V.C. radiation, U.V.B. and U.V.A. rays can penetrate it. Additionally, artificial sources like sunlamps and tanning beds contribute to U.V.C. exposure.
To gauge the solar U.V. radiation level at the Earth's surface, we rely on the Global Solar U.V. Index (U.V.I.). A higher index value corresponds to an increased potential for skin and eye damage. Although U.V. light is invisible, it persists throughout the day, even when the sun is not apparent or felt. These rays can adversely affect our skin, leading to sunburn, wrinkles, and an elevated risk of skin cancer. Prolonged unprotected exposure can also result in eye conditions such as cataracts, cornea damage, and vision loss.
Between 10 am and 4 pm, the sun reaches its peak intensity. It is advisable to seek shade or remain indoors during these hours. However, if extended outdoor activities are unavoidable, safeguard yourself with sunscreen rated at least S.P.F. 30, a broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and breathable clothing that covers exposed areas. It's crucial to note that U.V. rays can permeate clouds and reflect off surfaces like sand, snow, cement, and water. Therefore, comprehensive sun protection measures are necessary year-round, regardless of the season.
IMPORTANCE OF U.V. PROTECTION MONTH
- It serves as a reminder that our eyes are also vulnerable to the consequences of unprotected sun exposure. While we often associate excessive sun exposure with the development of skin cancer, it's crucial to acknowledge that our eyes can also suffer damage.
- It prompts us to appreciate something we often overlook. Since the dawn of time, the sun has been the primary source of energy for our planet, providing us with light. However, we must recognize that it can also pose significant risks if we fail to protect ourselves adequately.
- It emphasizes the year-round significance of sun protection. Sunscreen and sunglasses are not exclusive to the summer season alone. Ensuring the safeguarding of our skin and eyes from sun damage is essential every single day, throughout the entire year.
